In the context of the Nuclear deterrence/Disarmament Programme and the Korea Programme on Security and Diplomacy, FRS is pleased to invite you to a webinar: Going nuclear: strategic and domestic considerations in South Korea, which will be held online on Tuesday, December 3, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.

On January 11, 2023, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol provoked strong reactions by indicating that South Korea might consider acquiring nuclear weapons “if North Korean threats become more serious.” A few days later, he nuanced his remarks by indicating that for the moment the country remains a non-nuclear-weapon state according to the NPT. However, his comments illustrated an intensification of the South Korean debate on the relevance of developing an autonomous nuclear capability.

While the debate on the opportunity for South Korea to develop its own nuclear deterrent is not new, it will probably therefore see new developments in 2025 following the election of Donald Trump in the United States.

Panelists will assess the state of this conversation in Seoul, including domestic issues and strategic and military developments on the peninsula, the potential changes that can be expected following the inauguration of the new US administration, and foreign perceptions on the South Korean debate.
