The fifth-generation technology standard for cellular networks, also known as 5G, is going to be an important evolution of cyber-based communications as it would allow to transfer wider data sets over longer distances. Moreover, 5G would enable the use of extended remote devices for industrial management, including in strategic sectors such as energy networks, leading to an important paradigm change. 5G would support the development of industrial and personal IoT as well as the rise of AI-based applications.

Considering these developments, 5G deployment is a key strategic issue for industry and government stakeholders with implications for telecommunications infrastructure investments, cybersecurity, and international technology competition.
